Use the ‘Change voice’ item on the Special menu to select which voice to use to speak dictionary entries, and text files. You can choose which voice to use using a popup menu listing all those available, and change the speech pitch, rate, modulation and volume using the sliders. Click the ‘Test’ button to hear the current voice speaking its sample text, and ‘Reset’ to return
the pitch, rate and modulation to their default values for this voice.
When you are happy with the settings, choose OK. The new voice will only be used for new dictionaries and text files that are opened; the previous voice will still be used for already-open windows (because their speech channels have not changed).
The high quality TTS voices like Bruce, Agnes, and Victoria use a lot of memory, both in the applications memory space, and in the System’s. You will need to increase DictionaryEdit’s memory partition to at least 1200k to use the high quality voices. To do this, quit the program, hilight its icon in the Finder, and choose ‘Get Info…’ from the File menu. Enter 1200 in the ‘Preferred size’ box, close the window and re-launch DictionaryEdit. If memory is low becuase of use of these voices, you will start getting warning messages to that effect.
